A Plea To The Republic's Conscience

This past year of 2009 has given rise to a host of tyrants-from the White House to state governments to city councils. Progressive liberalism is a constant threat to the principles of liberty that are the vital foundation of our republic. We are now a country whose founding precepts are facing certain destruction-its citizens facing certain enslavement-enslavement to economic hardships caused by big government spending;enslavement to anti-theocratic radicals who banish all religious practice; enslavement to a mindfield of bureaucracy that serves politicians instead of individual freedoms; enslavement to massive, unbearable taxes that steal the very sweat from the average working man's brow and the hard-won fruits of capitalism!

These tyrants are no less imposing and dangerous because they hide behind designer skirts and in academic towers and not beneath a bejeweled crown. Today's tyranny is the culmination of a hundred years of stealthy planning by progressives-they employ some people as vessels to place their ideology in power. Politicians like Pelosi, Reid, Obama, are empty of the strength of character necessary to carry the ideologies of personal liberty we hold dear. They only function in an environment of group-think, an environment to which progressive liberalism is well-suited.

With the release of "The Manhattan Declaration: A Call of Christian Conscience" by a group of 125 Protestant, Catholic and Orthodox leaders, there is great cause to celebrate the independent American spirit that will not lie docile while multiple tyrants attempt to force the citizenry of this country to become good little soldiers for the liberal cause.

Although this particular treatise was obviously spurred by the divisive issues of abortion and gay marriage and laments the advance of secularism and the denigration of religion, what is important is that, at its heart, it is an act of defiance against a government attempting to force its citizens to accept laws and beliefs that their own consciences reject. The designers of this manifesto carry their defiance even further by recognizing the need for civil disobedience in fighting for the freedom to live their lives according to their beliefs.

The author and philosopher, Henry David Thoreau, in his essay "Civil Disobedience" declared that all governments are by definition more corrupt than not and people must be vigilant and act according to their conscience to defy injustices wherever they appear. Aren't infringements on freedom and liberty injustices to those who have been promised them? Is it not our duty to demand these freedoms as a part of our rights as Americans, based on the principles set forth by the likes of Thomas Jefferson and James Madison? Does it matter that government is bigger and more powerful than the individual who wishes to voice his dissent and retain his rights?

The answer is a resounding no! The government is not bigger and more powerful than the individual. The United States government is the individual-a collection of three hundred million individuals who from time to time must remind the politicians who is really in charge! Thoreau also said this: "There will never be a really free and enlightened State until the State comes to recognize the individual as a higher and independent power, from which all its own power and authority are derived, and treats him accordingly."

One of the premises of The Manhattan Declaration is that taxpayers who believe abortion is wrong should not be forced to pay taxes to support it. That same argument can be applied to the almost daily onslaught of threats to our freedom. Should we let eminent domain laws take our property? Should we allow government to decide on our medical care? Should we permit government to silence conservative talk radio/tv and tell us what we can listen to and what we can say?

This manifesto serves as a notice to tyrants in Washington in all their incidious forms who routinely ignore the voices of those who elected them. We will not be ignored! You are only allowed to operate from your desk in the Capitol Building in D.C., to introduce legislation, to debate said legislation and pass laws because We The People voted you into office. We put you where you are-we can remove you just as easily!

If you continue to forget that and to turn your head and close your ears when we plainly reject your laws, then we will take whatever action is needed to keep our liberty. Our Constitution and  Bill of Rights promises us control over our own lives- our livlihoods, futures, property and our words! No bill passed by an out-of-control assembly of legislators that usurps the core freedoms set forth by our founding fathers at this country's inception should ever become law! It if does, it is the responsibility of every citizen to act according to his own personal conscience to oppose it in speech and by action!

It is high time we all stop dancing around the "R" word. I am not afraid to say it! I say it with pride in the 200 years of freedom we have enjoyed for ourselves and offered to the rest of the world with open arms. This is a revolution. It goes beyond the passion of tea party rallies, the hordes of intense conservative bloggers and the fired-up rhetoric of conservative talk show hosts. It goes beyond the election of Barack Obama to the presidency. That was only a symptom of the problem.

This is the loud noise culminating from more than 60 years of discontented rumblings. This is the direct result of an overbearing government growing larger and larger since FDR saw fit to put this nation on the road to a redistribution of wealth and the realization of a nanny state!

The tea is now in the harbor-millions have protested across this country since last April 15th. The Bastille has been stormed-thousands showed up on the steps of the Capitol on 9/12 to voice extreme dissatisfaction to their Congressmen in an up-close-and-personal way. Martin Luther, that German religious thinker and leader who, in the seventeenth-century, nailed his 95 Theses to a church door and launched the beginnings of the Protestant denomination must be smiling.  With The Manhattan Declaration, we have now nailed an earthshaking thesis to the door of big government  It is an occasion worth noting when leaders of the Christian community recognize the potential need for civil disobedience. This could be the first pamphlet of the revolution!

We have at least 94 more theses to post. It is high time for every citizen to thoughtfully consider the issues before this country, to examine their own conscience and to be ready willing and able to defend their liberty, to stand bravely in the face of tyrannical agents who seek to destroy their America!

A Legacy Of Freedom For Our Children

This blog will be a departure from my usual commentary/smart-mouthed observations. Something tragic happened a few days ago in the county in Georgia where I live. I know it has happened many times before in other places, but there was that element of it-might-have-been-me that always gets one to thinking about mortality and to waxing philosophical about the meaning of life and how best to live that life.

A Cessna six-seater took off from the local airport, Briscoe Field-about two miles from my house in suburban Atlanta. It was one of those medical aircraft that transports doctors and patients to wherever it is they need to go. This one was bound for Sparta, Tenn. Shortly after takeoff, the plane crashed into a home on a quiet street. The residents were inside. The husband escaped but his wife could not. She perished in the horrible fire that resulted. One minute you're upstairs working from home with your wife of many years in the downstairs den and the next, she's gone and you're left shocked and alone. Such is life, I suppose.

That horrible occurence has rarely left my mind for a second since last Friday. I think of other possibilities that might have happened. That pilot might have been heading south instead of north and crashed that Cessna into my neighborhood or even my house. I can't help but think about the family I would leave behind were I to go in such circumstances or, worse yet, to see my spouse leave this earth before me, which would be the greater blow. Some might say that such morose speculations are a waste of valuable time. They are right on some level; life goes on and all of that. Yet, given the nature of the events taking place in this country, with the future so uncertain as to the liberties we have always taken for granted, I fear for the ones I would leave behind if the worst occurred.

That is why it is of the utmost importance that every single one of us does everything conceivable to stop this progressive liberal machine that has seized too much power so quickly. Everyone must keep up the calls to their Congressmen, keep voicing their opinions on radio talk shows, attend tea parties and be vocal with your dissent, blog on about the issues you feel most passionate about, and, most important, keep the fires of freedom in your hearts, where they may never die, in spite of the reaches of tyranny that threaten to destroy our republic.

We are not promised tomorrow.  Tragedies happen-like that of the couple in Lawrenceville, Ga. I only hope I live my life so that my children understand the freedom this country was based on. I hope I leave a legacy of fighting for that freedom at all costs that will continue in them and onward through future generations.

On a less serious note......my wonderful stepsister sent me this......a little light-hearted philosophy about life:

Cowboy's Guide To Life

by Bob Hardison

  • Most of the stuff people worry about ain't never gonna happen anyway.
  • Life ain't about how fast you run, or how high you climb, but how well you bounce.
  • Words that soak into your ears are whispered, not yelled.
  • Life is simpler when you plow around the stump.
  • Forgive your enemies. It messes up their heads.
  • Don't sell your mule to buy a plow.
  • If you're ridin' ahead of the herd, take a look back every now and then to make sure it's still there with ya.
  • Do not corner something that you know is meaner than you.  You cannot unsay a cruel word.
  • Remember that silence is sometimes the best answer.
  • Don't interfere with somethin' that ain't botherin' you none.
  • Timing has a lot to do with the outcome of a rain dance.
  • The easiest way to eat crow is while it's still warm. The colder it gets, the harder it is to swaller.
  • If you find yourself in a hole, the first thing to do is stop diggin'.
  • The biggest troublemaker you'll probably ever have to deal with looks at you in the mirror every mornin'.
  • Don't worry about bitin' off more 'n you can chew; your mouth is probably a whole lot bigger'n you think.
  • Good judgment comes from experience, and a lotta that comes from bad judgment.
  • Remember: Don't squat with your spurs on.
  • Live a good, honorable life. Then when you get older and think back, you'll enjoy it a second time.
  • If you get to thinkin' you're a person of some influence, try orderin' somebody else's dog around.
  • Lettin' the cat outta the bag is a whole lot easier than puttin' it back in.
  • The best sermons are lived, not preached.
  • Keep skunks and politicians and lawyers at a distance.
  • It don't take a very big person to carry a grudge.
  • If it don't seem like it's worth the effort, it probably ain't.
  • It's better to be a has-been than a never-was.
  • Meanness don't jest happen overnight.
  • When you wallow with pigs, expect to git dirty.

Letter to Thomas Paine

My Dear Mr. Paine,

I've been thinking about what you might have said to the protesting citizens of Iran. I think you would have lauded the Iranian people's fight for change. You would have stood behind them in exactly the same way as you did when we fought for our own independence from England in 1776.

It's hard to choose one of your famous quotes over another when trying to describe the meaning of liberty, the perils of tyranny and government, or the necessity of rebellion. Your political writings, such as your masterpiece Common Sense, were from the heart and mind of a common man but were anything but common- your words have resounded from the ears of brave patriots during the Revolutionary War  down through these 200 odd years to the ears of those of us who also cherish freedom.

You once said, in referring to the American colonists revolt against British rule that, "the sun never shone on a more worthy cause."
You understood the significance of that fight for independence and what it would mean to its citizens and to the entire world for many years to come. Maybe you already knew that our Republic would come to be the greatest ever on Earth, that other nations would look up to us with hope for their own dreams of democracy.

I am certain that today your voice would be the loudest, the most insistent that our current President should make a much bolder statement concerning the Iranian protests. Yes, Mousavi is really no better than Ahmadinejad; as the President of Iran during the Iran/Iraq War, he was just as ruthless-there's no indication that he would be any less strident with regards to nuclear intentions. But the demonstrations of outrage and revolt  in the streets of Tehran and other cities have long since thrown off the mantle of their original inspiration of reportedly illegal elections.

They embrace now a much broader ideology founded on the rights of the people,i.e., the rights of women not to be stoned in public. It is obvious from the words coming through to the outside world via internet videos and social networking sites that many of those protesting Iranians want to reach out to the West in a way that hasn't been seen for thirty years. They are talking about breaking free from the harsh, totalitarian laws of the radically Islamic Mullahs in power. Breaking the chains of tyranny-my dear Mr. Paine, I know you would agree-what cause on Earth at the present moment could be more worthy than this?

Could you speak a little louder, Mr. Leader of the Free World?

Our lukewarm president said a few words on Friday chastising the Iranian government for harsh and cruel tactics against its own people. That was indeed a necessary statement but he could have gone a lot further in making it clear that the U.S. applauds any and all people on this planet who rise up against oppression and heavy-handed tyranny. I'm by no means saying we should threaten Iran with troops or any kind of physical intervention but, we are, like it or not, the leader of the free world.  Some heartfelt, empassioned cheerleading would give much-needed support to the Iranian protestors. It's not as though it's a big secret to any country that America is on the side of liberty and democracy. If we don't champion the cause of freedom whenever we can, then we don't deserve the very rights and liberties on which we espouse to place such importance. It's not just about us standing up for our own rights and freedoms but for those of other nations as well. One country or another is going to be the world leader-I'd just as soon it be us!!

Power to the Fifty

Gun ownership border restrictions, education reform-these issues among many others, can best be resolved with two words, states' rights. Maybe my stance on the importance of the rights of individual states is partly due to my upbringing in a place where that concept is drilled into your head along with the multiplication tables. In South Carolina, John C Calhoun, Vice-President under Thomas Jefferson, was more than an admirable statesman- he was a hero.

But the main reason I wholeheartedly espouse the idea of states' rights is the United States Constitution. States' rights were built into the Constitution by its framers at its inception. In the Tenth Amendment, the Constitution sets forth explicitly, in unarguable language, where the rights of the citizens and states begin and the obligations of the federal government end.

To paraphrase an old Lorrie Morgan song, I would like to ask the current crop of Congressional seat holders, Cabinet cronies and high court lifers, "What part of the Tenth Amendment don't you understand?! It might also be worth asking how long it's been since they've read that part of the Constitution-or any of the Constitution, for that matter. It's a fair question since most of them admit to not having read the stimulus bill before it quickly passed in February.

Could it possibly be any clearer? The Tenth reads,"The powers not delegated to the United States by the Constitution nor prohibited by it to the States, are reserved to the States respectively, or to the people." The problem, of course, is that more than a hundred years, the Federal government has taken more and more liberty with the Constitution-many politicians today seem to see it as more of a flexiblee guideline instead of the rule of law that was meant to govern this country.

This usurpation of power by the federal government has been so slow and gradual and its real purpose so covered in the powdered sugar of benevolence that Americans have swallowed it whole. It doesn't help that a large number of Americans haven't themselves read the Constitution. What would help our citizenry awaken to what their government is doing would be a massive campaign to put a copy of the Constitution into everyone's hands. Some of you might remember the days when civics and government was a required course for high school graduation.

In the last few months, there have been movements afoot to recognize and promote states' rights. At least 20 states, including Texas, South Carolina(you know us, never afraid to fire the first shot!), Louisiana, Utah and Montana have adopted resolutions stating their sovereignty
under the Tenth Amendment. Many governors such as Rick Perry of Texas, Bobby Jindal of Louisiana and Mark Sanford of South Carolina have declared their willingness to fight for the rights given to their states by the United States Constitution.

One by one, states are beginning to realize that they can stand up for themselves. In anticipation of the possibility of stricter gun laws under the new administration, Montana passed a law that says if the guns were made in that state, they're the states' business! Georgia Secretary of State, Karen Handel, has a petition circulating to protest the Obama Justice Department's demand that Georgia immediately halt any voter registration requirements.(not hard to see where they're going with this. Let dead people and non-citizens vote to help the Dems) And we all know how passionate Rick Perry of Texas feels on the subject. He was so mad awhile back that he even mentioned the evil S word-yes, secession.

New organizations abound across the internet to promote the sovereignty of states. One of them is the Patrik Henry Caucus, whose plans include states descending en masse upon Washington in the event of any court ruling that denies any state their sovereignty.

State governments cannot be afraid to let their governors and legislatures be heard. We cannot throw in the towel and let this speedy slide to the left continue unchecked. Wherever gun ownership issues arise, they must be taken through every possible channel; wherever free speech is challenged, there must be such outcries as to embarrass the listeners; wherever our fundamental rights to assemble are threatened with a shutdown there must be even larger rallies.

This is still the United States of America-a careful reading of those words says it all. Our Founding Fathers did not envision the federal government we have today. They didn't want a centralized power with a strangle hold on the states and the individual. The Constitution is still in force-for now at least-and we have to show a solidarity the likes of which hasn't been seen since 1776. I am heartened by the vast number of websites and grassroots organizations that have taken hold of the American conscience in the last six months.

This is still our country and we the people have an inalienable right to protect its traditions, preserve its promises of freedom and, yes, as Thomas Jefferson wrote in the Declaration of Independence, if we see tyranny, we have not a right, but a responsibility to rid this country of that tyranny. We cannot be afraid.

We can get back our country. Small victories are being won all around this nation every day. You just don't hear about them because the left-loving media keeps them quiet.

Americans have turned a blind eye to the actions of politicians for far too long; now, we are paying the price. We are watching an unfolding of the consequences of allowing the federal government to grow to mammoth proportions. As a recent guest on Fox's Glenn Beck show observed, "We created this monster....now it's time to rein him in!"

They Are Crossing the Castle Moat!

Last week, a San Diego pastor and his wife were told by county officials they would be fined for holding a prayer group in their home. The county complained that it was "unlawful use of land." The couple was told to "stop religious assembly or apply for a major use permit"(which costs thousands of dollars.) The pastor hired a lawyer, the ACLU came out in his favor and internet blog opinions put the county in the hot seat-right where it should be.

I could understand the county's concerns if the religious gathering were this huge event drawing thousands of people-every year in my little Georgia town there is a big Christian crusade at the high school football stadium. Now, that is a crowd-traffic is a nightmare even with the police directing the flow. I'm sure they are required to get all kinds of public permits for that. But this was a private house. Can you imagine telling a group of twenty women they need a permit to hold a Mary Kay party?

Though I steadfastly maintain that church and state should be separated from my fears of the dangers of theocracy, I consider myself a Christian and this kind of situatioin is absolutely none of the government's business. They don't need to know what individuals do or don't, do who they worship or don't worship in the privacy of their own castles. It is a blatant encroachment on the First Amendment rights of all those participating in the home prayer group.

We're being scrutinized for what happens in our homes. Who knows how many people are at any one house in America on July Fourth, Labor Day or New Year's Eve? Years ago, my husband and I used to attend his boss's annual New Year's Eve party where at least 50 guests showed up, parking their cars all along the road leading to his house. They even set off large amounts of fireworks and no one complained.

I don't care what your religious affiliation is, or if you have one; this recent story out of California is a scary demonstration of what is happening in this country to individual liberty. Yes, San Diego may be dropping the citation but it's still a severe warning for all of us. County officials are saying that it was never an issue of religious freedom. It was a question of land use. What? The government hiding its true agenda under a desire to adhere to the 'law'? That doesn't happen in America! Yeah, and I have that proverbial bridge for you at half price!!

Incidences like this are going to continue happening as long as the government reaches further and further into the cache of our precious freedoms and deletes those they deem unnecessary.

We are a country inundated with individuals who want to ram their belief systems down the throats of freedom-loving Americans. It's not about right and left, Democrat and Republican. It's really only about those people who love liberty above all else and those who promote Socialism and Fascism.

Next, we'll be told what kind of car we can buy, and be monitored for the television shows we watch or what we purchase at Wal-Mart. We have to stop letting them do this to us. We need to keep each other informed of every single liberty infringement that the Almighty federal government commits. We have to keep our voices loud and adamant. We have to demand all of our rights and be willing to fight for them in the courts, in the media and in our communities. A chorus of millions can triumph over the tune of tyranny.
