Conservatism's Surge A True Change To Believe In

Last night's Republican rout in Virginia was a statement on President Obama no matter what Press Secretary Robert Gibbs tells us. The excuse that Virginia has always voted for the out-of-power-party in off year elections doesn't change the fact that the margin of swing in their vote since 2008 is astounding.  The same voters that put Barack Obama in the White House went for Bob McDonnell-northern Virginia which is practically a White House lawn ornament declared its independence from the D.C.machine on Tuesday.

The success of Chris Christie's New Jersey gubernatorial campaign is another loud and clear proclamation. New Jersey citizens are sick and tired of the corruption and stratospheric taxes-their decision to place their state in the hands of a man who is bent on cleaning up the Garden State bodes well for Americans demanding the same of their politicians in Washington.

It wasn't a lack of motivation and drive in candidate Doug Hoffman that cost Republicans the election in NY-23. His loss to the Democrat challenger, Bill Owens, says more about the Republican party's candidate selection process in the state of New York and the party's current divide than about Hoffman's ability to win. The Republican Congressional Conference didn't do themselves any favors when it convinced Scuzzyface....um, er...Dede.... to endorse the Democrat challenger.

Hoffman may not be the most personable, charismatic man; but many of the residents of that district were sympathetic with his values and appreciative of his practical approach to the problems they face. Coming from out of nowhere a few short months ago to make as big a splash as he did on both the local and national scene is indicative of the strength of the grassroots movement he represents.

There is more to celebrate from Tuesday's off-year election results than the capturing of two important governors' races. State referendums dealing with two explosive political issues were on the ballots in Maine and Texas. Maine voters overturned the previous legislative decision allowing gay marriage. It was a major conservative victory in that the Democrat governor had thrown his whole weight behind the new gay marriage law and state liberals thought it was going to be a law written in stone.

Though I am a conservative on fiscal policy, the scope of government and constitutional law, I am not what you would term a social conservative. The matters of abortion and gay marriage are not the uppermost on my agenda. However, I am currently an advocate for each and every conservative play that reeks havoc on the liberal power base in Washington. If that appears rather Machevellian to some, then I sincerely apologize.

But if we aren't practical and willing to come together with our varying ideologies to keep from losing our Republic's timeless principles to a bunch of liberals for whom causes are mere playthings on the road to power than we will have more to worry about than abortion and gay marriage rights. Above all, we must preserve the authenticity of these United States, that nation brilliantly designed and bequeathed to us more than two hundred years ago.

Leave it to Texas to seize the day and keep blazing that trail to true liberty and independence. Voters passed Proposition 11, allowing for a state constitutional amendment which "limits the use of eminent domain for public use and specifically defines "public use" to specifically not include "the taking of private property for...transfer to a private entity for the purpose of economic development or enhancement of tax revenue purposes." The amendment won't totally solve the eminent domain issue-there are still loopholes to close but it is a great beginning in dealing with government overreach. Can I hear a collective hurrah?

The other forty-nine need to look, listen and learn. Texas leaders' utter fearlessness in the face of government threats and attempted domination is beyond admirable. Sure, they may have more guts than cattle but then it's a question of what is worse: their condition or the problem other states have, which is, they're all hat and NO cattle! Texans believe wholeheartedly in those founding principles Washington. We need to hear that same dedication to the great cause of the United States of America from her sister states!

Those who voted for Barack Obama in the last presidential election succombed to his charming mantra, "Change we can believe in".  We have not had any change we can believe in. But his administration has demanded time and again in the short span of one year that we Americans change WHAT we believe in! And what we believe in is liberty and justice for all, just like it says in the Pledge of Allegiance.

Time to ante up state legislators. The stakes are high and now, now is the time to go out on the limb and demand your states' inherent right to govern themselves with as little federal government interference as possible. The conservative movement is on the rise and states are the ones who should be leading the charge!

A Healthcare Memorial to Kennedy Could Cost Our Very Lives

Yesterday was then, today is now- and I can no longer contain myself! Do the words, 'not on your life' mean anything to you people in Washington? If you think the average American is as torn up as you about the death of Senator Ted Kennedy then perhaps you need to wash the New England chowder out of your ear-most of us are fed up with the whole silly notion of Camelot! It's been almost fifty years since JFK took office. He's gone, Jackie O's gone, Bobby and Rose and Eunice are gone; sadly, John Jr. is also gone(the one Kennedy I actually had any ongoing respect for)-and now, Teddie. Caroline is still here but couldn't garner enough support to fill Hillary's old Senate seat. Their heyday is past. Let Camelot rest in peace.

If the people of Kennedy's home state of Massachusetts want to erect a statue or monument to their 'beloved' son, they should. That's for the state to decide. But the politicians in Washington shouldn't use honoring him as an excuse to railroad healthcare reform! Why should we citizens-and our children and grandchildren- shoulder the lifelong tax burden of an expensive, overly bureaucratic government controlled health plan which will likely result in medical rationing in order to pay homage to a politician that many of us, though we recognize his dutiful career, don't wish to pay that much homage to?

How extraordinarily utilitarian for the Democrats to consider using this occasion-the end of a man's life-to further a political cause. I'm not in the least surprised! If the House and Senate ram healthcare reform through behind our backs in the name of honoring Kennedy because he fought his whole career for such reform, it would be a brazen move that should not go unpunished in next year's elections. A law in Massachusetts to give the governor the authority once again to appoint someone to a vacated Senate seat would be the same kind of wanton political expediency.

She'll Be Back

Since Sarah Palin's surprise announcement last weekend that she would resign as Governor of Alaska, hateful speculation and derogatory rumors from the Washington establishment have been chasing her the way birds went after Tippi Hedren in the Hitchcock classic! Leave her alone already! We should simply take her at her word. She's sick of the ethics investigations which have turned up nothing.  As a mother, she is tired of her childrens' names being smeared on late-night talk shows! She told a national news audience with regards to her resignation, that she is weary of the constant personal attacks that have prevailed since McCain picked her as his 2008 vice-presidential running mate.

She has nothing to be apologetic about. So what if she's leaving in the middle of her term? She is passing the torch to Lt. Gov. Parnell, someone she trusts implicitly with running Alaska. She is not, as many of her state and national foes insist, leaving her constituents high and dry. Sarah Palin's many solid accomplishments are a matter of public record. She has handled the day to day operations of one of the largest states in the country with a practical, rational approach that, in a mere two and a half years, has seen her change the state's financial color from red to black.

Unlike most politicians, her idea of politics is to follow her own head and heart, not the politcially correct legions. As she is fond of saying, "no more politics as usual."In true form, Palin is acting in the best interest of her home state that she loves. She is  leaving before she costs the state of Alaska any more time and money with the numerous battles she is finds herself constantly waging.

Sarah Palin is simply backing off to renew and regroup. She has many fans in this country as evidenced by the massive infusion of energy McCain's campaign received last summer. Hers is a fearless voice committed to the best principles of Conservatism. She continues to make her voice known against the directions in which the current administration is headed. She is young, confident in her beliefs and dedicated to the principles that founded this country. And more importantly, she isn't afraid to speak out!

So, fire up the minivan Sarah ! Godspeed on your new journey! Write your book, tour the country to speak up for Conservatism,  rally support for the Republican agenda.  Like Arnold in the Terminator, you will be back. Maybe not in 2012, but sooner or later.
You are plain spoken, a sort of everywoman, a devoted mom who goes home at night to her kids, with a husband who works hard at a blue-collar job. You are the exact opposite of what Washington has come to expect....not the type of personality the political elite knows how to deal with. Washington is totally out of its element in trying to interpret what your true intentions truly are. They have no idea where you are coming from.....they live-and act from a totally different, more self-involved  perspective. Maybe what Washington needs is a little fish guts on its hands!

Mark Sanford's Middle-Age Misadventure

I hate to sound like Francis McDormand's sheriff character in "Fargo" but golly, geez,eh, Sanford- enough with the tears and public revelations of "needing to get your heart right"! Your apology speech the other day was way over the top. It's not usually a good political move to bawl like a broken baby in front of the national media. That kind of maudlin presentation doesn't exactly promote the public confidence. Where you should have simply and briefly started with what happened, went into how sorry you were for your indiscretion, were sorry for hurting your wife and family and ended with a 'I hope South Carolina will give me another chance to prove myself', you instead opted to regal your audience with  a watery recounting of far too many details of how this mistress stole your heart-you seemed more apologetic to her than to your state's constituency or your wife!

I can see the people of South Carolina forgiving you for your infidelity-none of us are immune to bad decisions in matters of love. Relationships are complicated; we don't know the particulars of the problems in your marriage, nor should we since it is really none of the public's business what goes on in the bedrooms of politicians. South Carolina is a Conservative state where the people hold a high standard of morality and ethics. But they also possess a lot of the milk of human kindness.

The problem with your middle-age misadventure, though, is not one of infidelity but of dependability and reliance which is very much the public's business You left your state government without a leader for almost a week. I'm sure a few close aides or staffers knew where you were but, still, if something disastrous like a deadly tornado or, God forbid, a terrorist attack had occurred in your absence, there would have been no official leader on the premises.

We don't care about the romantic details of your little trysts with some senorita- south -of- the -border. I made the mistake of letting my curiosity get the better of me and read a few of the emails published in the State, a major South Carolina newspaper. They read like notes we used to pass in study hall! You are a grown man, the political leader of one of the largest states east of the Mississippi; yet, you allowed this major infatuation with someone a continent away to cloud not only your personal judgment but your professional one as well.

Between overly-emotional outpourings on television and in emails, your weeklong disappearance out of the northern hemisphere and the rumor that someone spotted you speeding down an interstate highway, it looks to me like you are, as my Daddy used to say, "smack dab" in the middle of a major mid-life crisis!

Although I hate to have to say this, I believe it is probably in the best interests of the state of South Carolina, my home state which I care a great deal about, for you to resign your position as Governor. The phrase, 'How the mighty have fallen 'doesn't begin to describe my disappointment in you! Some of us Conservatives who watched you speak out in defiance of Obama's stimulus money and heard you staunchly defend states' rights were excited with the possibility of your running for President in 2012. That will never happen now. As I said before, this is not really about your affair. It is about your competencyo to hold a political office. All of the indications point to a very confused, anxious middle aged man who's adventures carried him too far into fantasy-a fantasy that has irreparably punctured reality.

South Carolina has lost a leader who could have been a great crusader for the Conservative cause. That is sad indeed.
But it is only politics....you have a family to worry about, a wife to consider(above all others) and four sons who need to learn from their father about the blessings of humility and penance. Take care of them now. I hope within your family there will be the strength to forgive and repair. We wish you only the best.
