A Plea To The Republic's Conscience

This past year of 2009 has given rise to a host of tyrants-from the White House to state governments to city councils. Progressive liberalism is a constant threat to the principles of liberty that are the vital foundation of our republic. We are now a country whose founding precepts are facing certain destruction-its citizens facing certain enslavement-enslavement to economic hardships caused by big government spending;enslavement to anti-theocratic radicals who banish all religious practice; enslavement to a mindfield of bureaucracy that serves politicians instead of individual freedoms; enslavement to massive, unbearable taxes that steal the very sweat from the average working man's brow and the hard-won fruits of capitalism!

These tyrants are no less imposing and dangerous because they hide behind designer skirts and in academic towers and not beneath a bejeweled crown. Today's tyranny is the culmination of a hundred years of stealthy planning by progressives-they employ some people as vessels to place their ideology in power. Politicians like Pelosi, Reid, Obama, are empty of the strength of character necessary to carry the ideologies of personal liberty we hold dear. They only function in an environment of group-think, an environment to which progressive liberalism is well-suited.

With the release of "The Manhattan Declaration: A Call of Christian Conscience" by a group of 125 Protestant, Catholic and Orthodox leaders, there is great cause to celebrate the independent American spirit that will not lie docile while multiple tyrants attempt to force the citizenry of this country to become good little soldiers for the liberal cause.

Although this particular treatise was obviously spurred by the divisive issues of abortion and gay marriage and laments the advance of secularism and the denigration of religion, what is important is that, at its heart, it is an act of defiance against a government attempting to force its citizens to accept laws and beliefs that their own consciences reject. The designers of this manifesto carry their defiance even further by recognizing the need for civil disobedience in fighting for the freedom to live their lives according to their beliefs.

The author and philosopher, Henry David Thoreau, in his essay "Civil Disobedience" declared that all governments are by definition more corrupt than not and people must be vigilant and act according to their conscience to defy injustices wherever they appear. Aren't infringements on freedom and liberty injustices to those who have been promised them? Is it not our duty to demand these freedoms as a part of our rights as Americans, based on the principles set forth by the likes of Thomas Jefferson and James Madison? Does it matter that government is bigger and more powerful than the individual who wishes to voice his dissent and retain his rights?

The answer is a resounding no! The government is not bigger and more powerful than the individual. The United States government is the individual-a collection of three hundred million individuals who from time to time must remind the politicians who is really in charge! Thoreau also said this: "There will never be a really free and enlightened State until the State comes to recognize the individual as a higher and independent power, from which all its own power and authority are derived, and treats him accordingly."

One of the premises of The Manhattan Declaration is that taxpayers who believe abortion is wrong should not be forced to pay taxes to support it. That same argument can be applied to the almost daily onslaught of threats to our freedom. Should we let eminent domain laws take our property? Should we allow government to decide on our medical care? Should we permit government to silence conservative talk radio/tv and tell us what we can listen to and what we can say?

This manifesto serves as a notice to tyrants in Washington in all their incidious forms who routinely ignore the voices of those who elected them. We will not be ignored! You are only allowed to operate from your desk in the Capitol Building in D.C., to introduce legislation, to debate said legislation and pass laws because We The People voted you into office. We put you where you are-we can remove you just as easily!

If you continue to forget that and to turn your head and close your ears when we plainly reject your laws, then we will take whatever action is needed to keep our liberty. Our Constitution and  Bill of Rights promises us control over our own lives- our livlihoods, futures, property and our words! No bill passed by an out-of-control assembly of legislators that usurps the core freedoms set forth by our founding fathers at this country's inception should ever become law! It if does, it is the responsibility of every citizen to act according to his own personal conscience to oppose it in speech and by action!

It is high time we all stop dancing around the "R" word. I am not afraid to say it! I say it with pride in the 200 years of freedom we have enjoyed for ourselves and offered to the rest of the world with open arms. This is a revolution. It goes beyond the passion of tea party rallies, the hordes of intense conservative bloggers and the fired-up rhetoric of conservative talk show hosts. It goes beyond the election of Barack Obama to the presidency. That was only a symptom of the problem.

This is the loud noise culminating from more than 60 years of discontented rumblings. This is the direct result of an overbearing government growing larger and larger since FDR saw fit to put this nation on the road to a redistribution of wealth and the realization of a nanny state!

The tea is now in the harbor-millions have protested across this country since last April 15th. The Bastille has been stormed-thousands showed up on the steps of the Capitol on 9/12 to voice extreme dissatisfaction to their Congressmen in an up-close-and-personal way. Martin Luther, that German religious thinker and leader who, in the seventeenth-century, nailed his 95 Theses to a church door and launched the beginnings of the Protestant denomination must be smiling.  With The Manhattan Declaration, we have now nailed an earthshaking thesis to the door of big government  It is an occasion worth noting when leaders of the Christian community recognize the potential need for civil disobedience. This could be the first pamphlet of the revolution!

We have at least 94 more theses to post. It is high time for every citizen to thoughtfully consider the issues before this country, to examine their own conscience and to be ready willing and able to defend their liberty, to stand bravely in the face of tyrannical agents who seek to destroy their America!

Conservatism's Surge A True Change To Believe In

Last night's Republican rout in Virginia was a statement on President Obama no matter what Press Secretary Robert Gibbs tells us. The excuse that Virginia has always voted for the out-of-power-party in off year elections doesn't change the fact that the margin of swing in their vote since 2008 is astounding.  The same voters that put Barack Obama in the White House went for Bob McDonnell-northern Virginia which is practically a White House lawn ornament declared its independence from the D.C.machine on Tuesday.

The success of Chris Christie's New Jersey gubernatorial campaign is another loud and clear proclamation. New Jersey citizens are sick and tired of the corruption and stratospheric taxes-their decision to place their state in the hands of a man who is bent on cleaning up the Garden State bodes well for Americans demanding the same of their politicians in Washington.

It wasn't a lack of motivation and drive in candidate Doug Hoffman that cost Republicans the election in NY-23. His loss to the Democrat challenger, Bill Owens, says more about the Republican party's candidate selection process in the state of New York and the party's current divide than about Hoffman's ability to win. The Republican Congressional Conference didn't do themselves any favors when it convinced Scuzzyface....um, er...Dede.... to endorse the Democrat challenger.

Hoffman may not be the most personable, charismatic man; but many of the residents of that district were sympathetic with his values and appreciative of his practical approach to the problems they face. Coming from out of nowhere a few short months ago to make as big a splash as he did on both the local and national scene is indicative of the strength of the grassroots movement he represents.

There is more to celebrate from Tuesday's off-year election results than the capturing of two important governors' races. State referendums dealing with two explosive political issues were on the ballots in Maine and Texas. Maine voters overturned the previous legislative decision allowing gay marriage. It was a major conservative victory in that the Democrat governor had thrown his whole weight behind the new gay marriage law and state liberals thought it was going to be a law written in stone.

Though I am a conservative on fiscal policy, the scope of government and constitutional law, I am not what you would term a social conservative. The matters of abortion and gay marriage are not the uppermost on my agenda. However, I am currently an advocate for each and every conservative play that reeks havoc on the liberal power base in Washington. If that appears rather Machevellian to some, then I sincerely apologize.

But if we aren't practical and willing to come together with our varying ideologies to keep from losing our Republic's timeless principles to a bunch of liberals for whom causes are mere playthings on the road to power than we will have more to worry about than abortion and gay marriage rights. Above all, we must preserve the authenticity of these United States, that nation brilliantly designed and bequeathed to us more than two hundred years ago.

Leave it to Texas to seize the day and keep blazing that trail to true liberty and independence. Voters passed Proposition 11, allowing for a state constitutional amendment which "limits the use of eminent domain for public use and specifically defines "public use" to specifically not include "the taking of private property for...transfer to a private entity for the purpose of economic development or enhancement of tax revenue purposes." The amendment won't totally solve the eminent domain issue-there are still loopholes to close but it is a great beginning in dealing with government overreach. Can I hear a collective hurrah?

The other forty-nine need to look, listen and learn. Texas leaders' utter fearlessness in the face of government threats and attempted domination is beyond admirable. Sure, they may have more guts than cattle but then it's a question of what is worse: their condition or the problem other states have, which is, they're all hat and NO cattle! Texans believe wholeheartedly in those founding principles Washington. We need to hear that same dedication to the great cause of the United States of America from her sister states!

Those who voted for Barack Obama in the last presidential election succombed to his charming mantra, "Change we can believe in".  We have not had any change we can believe in. But his administration has demanded time and again in the short span of one year that we Americans change WHAT we believe in! And what we believe in is liberty and justice for all, just like it says in the Pledge of Allegiance.

Time to ante up state legislators. The stakes are high and now, now is the time to go out on the limb and demand your states' inherent right to govern themselves with as little federal government interference as possible. The conservative movement is on the rise and states are the ones who should be leading the charge!

Jars and Jars of Czars!

Don't you Congressmen think this whole czar thing has gotten way out of hand? Why are you  all so silent on the subject of a president who is abusing his position? Your inaction has allowed him to blow up the White House into a giant balloon of special interest-I'll wash your hands you wash mine-cronyism. If you don't grab the string of this balloon soon it will rise into the hinterlands of tyranny. I

It's within your power to stop all of this. The Constitution is still intact, for now. Your Congress has been on a short tether attached to the White House! Cut the cord, wake up and do your job! Question the President's actions. The system is called checks and balances for a reason! You keep each other in check and that guarantees balance. There is nothing balanced about the United States Executive Branch at the moment. It's running loose like a rabid dog on the open prairie.

Obama has forty czars to date. Forty!! Only 43% of regular government positions have been filled, but he has his czars! Jars and jars of them! Even the all- important State department jobs are only half filled. Well, it used to be all -important. Obama seems happy enough with only his czars. And he's been able to appoint them at will, with no one running background checks or asking questions about the czars' character or mindset.

The new 'green czar' Van Jones, has proudly made public his membership in the Communist party; his radical background is there for everyone to see. Does President Obama not wonder what voters might think of a leader who chose a man with such extreme beliefs? Wouldn't those kind of dubious choices be reflected in his approval ratings?

As if the lengthy list of czars and their questionable job descriptions weren't cause enough for concern among Americans, the list of those czar positions being considered will send chills down your spine:

Positions created but not yet filled:

41.behavioral science czar - Why not! We're already being studied like Pavlov's dogs to see what words and phrases we react to and salivate over.

42.copyright czar - Don't really have a clue about what this one would do. Maybe he'll help All the President's Men retain the rights to positive political words and leave us poor conservative/libertarian/independents with the 'angry mob' words.

Positions being planned:

1.income redistribution czar - Pretty much says it all, doesn't it? He really ought to make this guy the Second in Command because everything this administration is doing is to that very end!

2.land-use czar - A no-brainer. Promoting the widespread invocation of eminent domain.

3.consumer financial protection czar, aka mortgage czar (source) - helping people who can't afford a house skate on their mortgage.

4.radio-internet fairness czar . Again, a no-brainer. Call the Fairness Doctrine whatever you wish, it's still what it is. This guy will try to
permanently close down conservative talk radio.

5.student loan czar, to oversee a program of mandatory service in return for college money (source) - We'll only help you go to college if you volunteer as we say-how long before the volunteering will be mandatory for everyone whether they want college or not?

6.voter list czar - Given the involvement of Acorn and other community organizer groups with Obama and friends, who knows what kind of corruption this guy can cook up on the voter rolls!

7.zoning czar - Assistant to the land use czar and the voter list-czar!!

What this country needs is to replace the problems in Congress next fall and then address the constitutionality of an Executive Branch run amuck!

From Parent to Tyrant

On the last Fourth of July, our country reached its two hundred thirty-third birthday. To honor the anniversary of our official declaration of independence from England, Americans gorged themselves on hamburgers, hot dogs and spareribs. They gathered in public areas to watch millions of dollars of pyrotechnics go up in smoke.

There's not a lot of talk anymore about the Revolutionary War, its heroes or how patriots suffered from cold and hunger to fight for their freedom. The United States has moved farther and farther away from thoughts of a war that happened so long ago-a war that gave us what we have enjoyed for more than two hundred years.

Americans have turned July Fourth into a reason for a picnic and fail to understand that day by day they are becoming the mindless governed, unable to name their legislators and discuss political actions. Too many spend their time worrying about Brittany Spear's latest escapade or who is winning on American Idol. Do they realize the consequences of such willing ignorance?

They mutter and complain about this law and that ordinance but carry on with their lives as if these very injustices won't affect them. As if
Eminent Domain could never really be used against their homesteads-as if their child's suspension from school over some insipid zero tolerance infraction isn't worth fighting over.

Did the organizers of the Boston Tea Party turn a blind eye to taxation without representation? No, they weren't afraid to voice their dissent and make a statement-however wasteful and short-sighted it was. Before we truly celebrate our independence Americans must first desire to be independent and be willing to speak up and fight against laws that infringe upon their personal freedoms.

Freedom demands responsibility; responsibility demands choice. Choices can be a burden. It's easier for people to rely on the government to make their choices. I once knew a young woman who rightly noted that people can be like sheep. They will follow anyone or any one idea anywhere if it means they won't have to think for themselves.

There is a danger in Americans ignoring the very government they allow to do their thinking for them. The same government that acts as a benevolent parent to take care of its people's every need may soon transition to a malevolent tyrant bent on power without the constituents attentive eye.

In a post 9/11 world, it is much easier to err on the side of security than to ponder the degradation of our freedoms. In light of both real and perceived terror threats against Americans, the government has imposed stricter regulations in some areas. Americans rail against these rules in private without rising to any great heights to protest. They want to be free; they want to feel safe. What a quandary!

Benjamin Franklon found it no quandary, however. In a letter from the Pennsylvania General Assembly to their governor in 1755, the statesman noted that "anyone who would give up essential liberty for temporary safety deserves neither liberty nor safety."

Consider prisoners at a jail such as Rikers Island in New York. They are relatively secure, have three square meals daily, a place to sleep and free health care. They are not required to make decisions or weigh choices. But their security comes with a price- their freedom.

Some Americans don't mind taking welfare money from the government to provide for their families. Where is their personal pride in earning their own money and supporting themselves? Don't they realize that only when they take responsibility for their own financial future and are motivated from within can they possibly know true freedom?

There is a large movement afoot for universal health care. Its supporters say this would create more equal medical provisions; but, it would deprive individuals of the right to choose their own doctors and put them at the mercy of the government to decide what is best for their health. Under what definition could those kinds of circumstances qualify as freedom? Equality does not guarantee freedom. People may be equally downtrodden and equally controlled.

The inherent danger of leaning on the government too much is that the same parental figure who now protects you from may turn into the dictatorial parent who makes demands upon.(In much the same way that a loving parent can turn into an overbearing caretaker who believes that only they know what is best and who derive satisfaction from this perceived power.)

Freedom comes at a cost. That cost is bravery. Individuals don't deserve freedom if they're not willing to be brave. The final word from The Star-Spangled Banner is often sung, yet, how often considered? In the midst of red, glaring ramparts, what about bravery? It is the courage to face the unknown. Freedom is full of unknowns-it offers no guarantees. Security may guarantee safety but sacrifices freedom.

The same arm extended to offer security is, as John Adams once observed, "always stretched out, if possible, to destroy the freedom of thinking, speaking and writing." If Americans let their government help them today than tomorrow their demands may follow. It's the proverbial, "Give them in inch...."

Thomas Jefferson said that "the price of freedom is eternal vigilance. He was convinced in the deepest part of his heart that government was never to be trusted. It was to be used as little as possible and kept in check by a watchful public. I think Jefferson would be appalled by today's average American and his general lack of knowledge and interest in the government's daily actions-actions that might well affect his own life. Trust is essential in a personal relationshp. But a little mistrust in government goes a long way towards ensuring freedom.
